This article is the result of a public lecture given at the Second International Congress at the Catholic University of Mozambique. The main purpose of the lecture was to be in consonance with the main theme of Congress namely, "The Role of the University in the process of pacification, reconciliation, democratization and development of society". Paying particular attention to the sub-theme of "Peace", the article considers this to be a difficult task because to talk about peace is to talk about something very significant to Mozambique. It is, and has been a permanent quest, as in many other contexts. However, in our context, peace is still a reality in permanent becoming, challenging all of us: politicians, academics and civil society. There is need for each and every person to have a different understanding of Peace: we need to look at the Gospel of Jesus Christ. From this perspective, the search for peace is a mission given to every man and woman who intends to be called Son or Daughter of God; but the condition that Christ establishes for someone to enter the Kingdom of Heaven is to be a peacemaker. This implies that Peace happens when everyone in his day-to-day endeavors is always making peace with others surrounding him. This means that without underestimating the political dimension covering this topic, this is perhaps the greatest challenge we need to be facing every day. In the context of this article, the university as an agent that promotes Peace and Reconciliation gains special relevance.
